The New Republic Defense Fleet used the rank of fleet admiral for the leader of the navy. In the Imperial Navy, fleet admirals had the capacity to serve as the commanding officers of multiple task forces, a squadron, or a mobile numbered fleet. The Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire also utilized the rank, with holders serving above standard admirals but below grand admirals within the hierarchy.
